In the heart of the sun

"Cazimi" time

Some of you have something conjunct your sun (by the way, I wrote about moon conjunctions a while back but sent it to no one because it’s more personal, both literally for me and also literally in general). To have something conjunct your sun means that at the time of your birth, the sun was lined up with the planet in question from the earth’s perspective: they appeared to be occupying the same place in the sky. A conjunction is a fusion of energy, and the sun is both your essence and your ego, meaning: you cannot do the function of the planet in question without bringing your ego into the equation. (This is true for all conjunctions, that they are fusions, just remove “essence/ego” from the equation and insert whatever planets you’ve got involved. You cannot separate the energy as much as you might like to.)

We are about to get into some ancient-ass astrology, so hold on to your butts. As with everything, I don’t know why this is a thing, but it’s an observable thing. Basically: anything within 15 degrees of the sun is said to get “burned by the rays of the sun” which is to say ego-infected, except for planets within 17 minutes of the sun (on either side), which bestows a status known as “cazimi” which means “in the heart of the sun”, basically exalting the planet to king status, or, said another way, the planet functions really well because it has a sun-like turbo-boost. It’s still fused with that ego, but you can pretty purely *be* the function of the planet in question in a less ego-distorted way.

So I just gave you the general rule and exception to the rule. And by the way, the first time someone said “cazimi” to my face I reacted like the guy just said “abracadabra” randomly out of nowhere (“oh so we’re just making up words now?”). It makes you sound really smart if you throw it around in astrology circles. If I wrote the dictionary definition on cazimi it would be “really, really fucking close to the sun.” 17 minutes is no joke, ya’ll. It’s a sliver of nothing.

My dad has Mercury conjunct his sun in the regular sense, which is the “burned by the rays” sense. It’s 27 minutes off. Close, but not close enough for cazimi status. Is he constantly reading? Is he constantly telling other people what he learned from that reading? Does he nap with books on his face? Did he work as a teacher for a while? Does he like to debate? Does he get upset when you don’t ultimately agree with his ideas? Yes. He’s what you’d call a “thinker.”

I have hundreds of charts, and I think I’ve only seen a handful of cazimi planets in the charts of people I know. One of my good friends has a cazimi moon: born at an actual new moon (neat!) at 9 minutes off, my friend EMBODIES the damn moon. Feminine in almost all senses you can conjure. Maternal. Always feeding people. Always feeding ME. Hostess with the mostess. Works in a mental health field. Has had issues with people making her into their mother/caretaker, which happens to a lot of women, but let’s say this is more than the normal amount. But none of this seems to come from an ego place, but rather a natural, flowing place.

Okay, those are two real people. Now let’s make them not real and paint you a better picture by reversing them. Let’s say my now-fake dad has a cazimi Mercury. He’s just be a pure flow of information, and not so much upset when disagreed with. He’d be all about ideas but not so much HIS ideas. He’d probably be teaching constantly. People would call him to have him fact-check things, as though he was their personal Google.

My now-fake friend, whose moon got demoted to non-cazimi: oh she’d be cooking for you but she’d be VERY OFFENDED if you didn’t eat everything. Now the ego and the feelings are fused together and we’re talking about genealogy nonstop. And taking things personally, Michael Jordan-style. Very personally.

Basically: things that get too close to the sun get eaten up by the sun and can get distorted in their function, unless they are incredibly close to the sun, in which case the sun treats that planet/function like its special guest.
